Educational Needs & Objectives
Overview
The University of Florida Department of Urology CME program will elucidate and expound upon the general urologic treatment topics that are the focal points of ongoing regional and national dialogues within the urology medical community. The ongoing dialogue has created the need for the critical analysis of treatment options, diagnostic tools, and care guidelines; with this stated, the UF Department of Urology CME Seminar was designed to provide a deeper insight into these topics.
Needs
Prostate Cancer and Urologic Malignancies: Urology physicians in Florida are faced with an increasing number of patients with prostate and urologic cancers as well as the additional time-constraining challenges of knowing the diagnostic benefits of the latest advancements made in prostate cancer imaging, the evolving guidelines for urologic malignancies – from robotic surgery to active surveillance of prostate cancer - and understanding the benefits and potential detriments to testosterone treatment in men successfully treated for prostate cancer.
This module will examine the systemic delivery of care and the resources available within Florida, the advancements in prostate cancer imaging, the guidelines for managing and treating urologic malignancies and will delve into the testosterone replacement controversy. The lectures are designed to highlight the best practices and will walk participants through current controversies in urologic oncology. The lectures will be underscored and reinforced through a multi-disciplinary panel discussion on selected urologic oncology case studies.
Stones, General, and Pediatric Urology: This module was designed to highlight new treatment approaches and to emphasize evaluation and treatment options for adult and pediatric urology patients. These sessions were designed to address the common questions facing urologists that are evaluating and treating difficult pediatric urologic conditions in their respective communities.
Female Urology: This module was designed to provide an in-depth discussion on the evaluation and treatment of pelvic organ prolapse from the Female Urology and Gynecology perspectives.
Learning Objectives

- Identify the prostate cancer resources that are available to physicians and patients within the state of Florida
- Identify and integrate the appropriate utilization of advanced prostate cancer imaging
- Define and articulate current urologic cancer guidelines
- Recognize how the latest advancements in robotic surgery will impact the future delivery of patient care
- Explain the clinical indications and strategies for the active surveillance of prostate cancer
- Describe the clinical indications for testosterone replacement therapy
- Describe the indications, use and efficacy of new stone treatment modalities
